“This time I shall blow away the status quo” Aiba Masaki-san on Tantei in Kizoku style
Idol group “ARASHI” Aiba-Masaki-san who takes the leading role of “Kizoku Tantei” (Fuji, Monday 21:00) broadcast from 17 April onwards. He talked about his thoughts about the leading role on the 30th anniversary “Getsuku”, and his work as White Team Host of NHK Kouhaku Uta Gassen last year, as well as his kizuna with ARASHI’s members.
―― “Kizoku Tantei” is an unusual character who does not do deduction himself.
“This is a character with wide breath. Keeping the minimum elegance and good upbringing, Kizoku lives his life freely. And it is said that tantei is a hobby (giggle).”
―― What is the component in common to yourself?
“No, I have nothing in common with Kizoku. I am basically a common person.”
―― Though the character does not do deduction, he says lot of romantic words to ladies.
“Right right. The character says romantic words and care about the wounded ladies. However, there is no love developed. It seems the acquaintance only lasts one day (giggle). This gap is great. The character is with great elegance, he is not frivolous and is considerate. Someone will be hurt if there is criminal isn’t it. And the character takes care of this person who gets hurt.
I think the most important point in acting in this drama is about the elegance. The Director and Producer told me to expand the breath of the character. There was a theme to be as aggressive as possible while keeping the elegance. While Kizoku largely suavely poses, he is also quite close to common people like us.”
―― If anything, you’ve acted quite some friendly characters.
“Right so. Until now the characters I act are like myself, perhaps there is my image behind, but this time I’ll blow these images away. It is fun to blow them away.”
―― Following “Yokoso, Wagaya e” in 2015, this is your second time leading Getsuku. And this drama is the 30th anniversary of “Getsuku”.
“Since I know this world Monday 21:00 time slot means drama to me, I have watched a lot, and it is my honour to appear in Getsuku for two times. And this is the 30th anniversary drama. Though the more I think about it the more pressure I feel, since this is not the occasion to talk about it, I shall work hard on what I can manage to do. I can only work hard on it. I can only work to my utmost to make a good drama.”
―― What is your image towards Getsuku?
“The image of love is strong. Love story, or about love towards family. Like "Hitotsu Yane no Shita”. “101st Marriage Proposal” is also impressive. When it was broadcast all the children imitated the scene and walked in front of truck. It was dangerous.
This time it is unconventional. The previous Getsuku I acted was also unconventional. I was chased by stalker (giggle).“
―― How is the atmosphere of the filming site?
"Though there is thing like Kizoku’s mobile house, the things inside it are, well, luxurious. Really like one-and-only-one thing. We take great care of them so as not to break them.”
―― The co-cast is luxurious too.
“I feel that I am working with many great people. Nakayama Miho-san is the queen of Getsuku. There are also many experienced people I have a wonderful experience in this work.”
―― What do you learn from these experienced people?
“The Director takes command of the drama and also does my performance, though he does not directly instructs me to act, when we act together I indeed understand what I should do from this experience.
I am not sure if he would teach me if I ask him. Because everyone is so splendid, I want to learn from everyone. If there is chance during the filming I shall ask for their teaching.”
―― Last year you started sports programme at NHK, hosted alone at Kouhaku, you keep taking big roles.
“Indeed so. This is really a fortune. I feel that I have been doing once-in-lifetime things. I think that I worked on Kouhaku with the spirit of taking challenge and not to give up and not to escape. Kouhaku was tough. There were a lot of MC’s blocks. There were things different from rehearsal.
However, of course this is an experience I don’t normally have, and I feel that the fear of taking the challenge of hosting Kouhaku has faded a lot. I have worked to my best, it can’t be helped if the result became like this, but if I didn’t work to my best I would regret a lot.”
―― ARASHI members are active in a variety of works.
“I respect a lot the other four members of ARASHI. We are good fellows, I am at ease whenever with them. However, since I am the most kouhai among five, basically my sentiment towards them is respect.
We have regular programme, and periodically release CD, so basically we work as a group. We also have live once a year, sometime later we shall discuss it. Since we also start discussion on album early, including our own work meetings, there are a lot of group activities.
When we discuss what we want to do, members gather for discussion and throw keywords. When we have a decision, next we put it on paper. Though I may still forget it (laugh). We repeat this process and then we decide the theme, and then we decide the title, and then we decide the songs, we work like this.”
―― What is your upcoming target?
“No doubt the core of our work is singing and dancing, I hope more people, even one more, would see our singing and dancing performance. There are quite a lot of concert venues and places which we have not been.
Recently we are fortunate to be able to perform at five big domes, while (fans) must be coming to the nearest places don't they. Last year we went to various places during arena tour though, there are still places we have not been. I think it would be great if we would go to the prefectures our fans are living, and even a bit repay our fans’ kindness and support.
Not just meeting directly, through drama, movie, variety show, TV, magazine, and news, I hope people would see various Aiba Masaki and ARASHI. It would be close to repaying fan’s kindness and support. I think it would be great to do things like reporting our recent status to people who have been helping and supporting us.”
―― What kind of “Aiba Masaki” would be this time?
“This time I think it would be Aiba Masaki whom people have never seen before. I think people would enjoy Aiba Masaki in Kizoku style (giggle).”
