Although the number of waterproof smartphones is increasing,
there are things to pay attention to when taking a bath.

In July 9, in the state of New Mexico, USA,
Madison Coe, aged 14 years old,
had a tragic accident that
she died because of electrocution while using her smartphone during a bath.

After that, during the investigation by the local police,
it was found that Coe was using her smartphone in the bath while it was charging.

The phone was connected with the charger and the extension cord,
and was plugged into the outlet of the bathroom.

It was suspected that part of this extension cord was worn out,
and she got electrocuted by touching that part.

After the accident, Madison’s mother wrote on Facebook
“Sweet Madison, 14 years old, died in a heartbreaking accident while using her phone in the bath.”
“Please please let her voice be heard and protect and educate your children on the fatal dangers of electrocution.”

Her message received great attention.

According to NITE, the National Institute of Technology and Evaluation,
which is investigating accidents such as personal belongings,
in Japan, it seems that there is no case of similar accidents being reported for the moment.

On the other hand, in a survey,
among male and female from teens to 30s in the country,
the percentage of people who answered that they used their smartphones in the bath
was a bit more than 30%, especially among teens,
the proportion was high.

Today, we also asked people in the streets.

“I definitely bring it along when taking bath. I take it with me everyday.”
“As I play my phone all along, I stay in the bath for around 2 hours.”

“I take it with me. I go on LINE, I also listen to music.”

“Sometimes I use it.”
“The things I do (with smartphone) in my daily life,
I also do them in bath.
Like watching movie, or sending messages on LINE.”

Among the 32 people we interviewed in Shibuya,
17 people answered that they would use their smartphones in the bath.

We also asked about the accident about charging the phone while taking a bath.

“I thought it was scary.”
“However, I do not charge it (in bath).”

“Isn’t it nice to have a relaxing time in the bath without (using smartphone)?”

“If the condition of Japan is unit bath just like the US,
perhaps many Japanese people would have such accidents too.”

So, what should we pay attention to when using mobile phones in the bath?

We asked business operators of mobile phones.

First of all, although recently the number of waterproof mobile phones is increasing,
the charger is not waterproof.

If you plug your mobile phone to the charger in the bathroom,
in occasions such as the phone dropping in the bath, there is a danger of electrocution.
Therefore please absolutely do not charge your phones in the bathroom.

Besides, after using it in the bath,
if you charge your mobile phone which is wet
using the charger which is splashed with liquids such as water or juice,
it is dangerous.

When the terminal of the charger is in short-circuit,
there is possibility of causing heat generation, smoke emissions or fire.

Please dry your wet mobile phone thoroughly before charging it.
Some manufacturers recommend drying it for at least 5 hours.

And then, in the circumstance that the terminal of the charger gets wet,
it is important to wipe it clean with things such as tissue paper,
and to dry it thoroughly before using it.

Not only mobile phone,
it is dangerous to use any electric appliance in the bath while charging it.
Please absolutely do not do this.
