OY: Was there any occasion that you thought you couldn’t go on when you perform on site?
N: I thought “I screwed up”… when I sung a new song, I forgot the lyrics of my part, during concert, when I thought what should I do, then I passed the mic to audience like “everyone sing together”, but it was new song, no one knew the lyrics, and they were like “what is that person doing?”. There was such moment, the audience were like “this is a new song, why does he ask everyone to sing? We don’t know the lyrics”. At that time, the audience just waved their penlights pretending that they didn’t see me.
OY: At that time, the reaction of Johnny’s fans is beautiful.
N: Beautiful. A feeling of “this is Japanese”. Really in concerts there are no enemies. No matter what I say, even I say weird things, audience think it’s fun.
This is the scariest thing. If I treat this a field for certain, and behave so in various other fields, thinking “what an interesting guy I am”, “what a quick-witted guy I am”, this wouldn’t be interesting at all in other sites. If I keep behaving so, in a strange way, I’d only rest on my laurels.
If we don’t behold the feeling “such occasion only happens here (in concerts)”, and, for instance, when I act a film I think “well, it’s OK, it’ll be fine as long as I do it”, it’ll be out. I haven’t seen any variety programme with talents thinking “Wouldn’t it be OK? As long as I say something here, it’ll be fine, audience will find it funny” that would turn out interesting.
Therefore, indeed, if we ourselves don’t think “above all, more than anyone, this is a precious occasion, this is a dream place”,
Indeed there would be always a possibility of giving a wrong impression to others.
OY: You are an idol though you don’t give people a feeling of idol. When you work as a film actor, it’s like you are having a contest with other occupations, right?
N: I am often told “why do you regard yourself as idol?”, “why do you keep saying you are an idol?”. But I don’t have intention of keeping saying that, I don’t have impression of saying this too, but, I have my line of thinking. This line, for instance, when I act, because I don’t reach the line I think about, I shouldn’t call myself “actor”. Therefore, the foundation is, when I am asked “what do you work?”, I explain my work as “I am a member of a group called ARASHI.” But when we look at the contents of my work, I perform in concerts, I sing and release CDs, I appear in film and theatre, and I do variety programmes, I do lots of works, right? This is probably similar to your situation.
OY: Indeed.
N: When I act, and appear in work promotion, I am often called “orthodox actor”, “an actor with skills”. But actors are not described like this, right? Just like I haven’t been called “orthodox idol”, not even once.
OY: Because Johnny’s is orthodox idol with no doubt.
N: Yes. Because this is something widely accepted in this world, this became a culture, no one would emphasise Johnny’s idol work as “idol”, because people are fully aware of this. So, actors whom people are fully aware as actors would not be described as this, because this would be disrespectful to them, at least I think so, if an actor is introduced as “you really act well” (this would be disrespectful to the actor).
So I am still introduced like this in this world, like “this person also acts in film”, like “this is an actor with certain style”, at this moment, though I am still offered work in such field (acting), I am bit touched that I still have a place (ARASHI) to return to.
OY: What’d you do ten years later? Would you still be singing and dancing?
N: I’ll be 45 years old ten years later. I want to sing and dancing that time, ideally. But there is one thing to think about. We have been working many years since debut, and there are kouhais coming out, I want to create an environment for kouhais to work well. We are also taken care by our senpais, for instance, because senpais had concerts here, they released CDs, they appeared in variety programmes, they have opened such various paths for us, so that we can continue walking on these paths, right? It’s like a school, I do not allow these paths to be dirtied or closed in our generation. Because there are many people who would continue walking on them.
Therefore rather than we ourselves continue walking on these paths, we should make these paths as easy for kouhais to walk as possible. It’s like I want kouhais would heritage the name ARASHI. Indeed because we have been taken care (by senpais) like this, at least we want to do so as well.
