Why is chaos occurring with the moving of the US Embassy this time…?
I shall peruse the background.

This is a photo which the Mayor of Jerusalem posted on Twitter.

The Mayor who was on a stepladder took a memorial photo with the sign indicating the direction to the new US Embassy in Jerusalem.

He welcomed the decision of the US commenting “This is not a dream - it's reality!”.

Jerusalem which is said to mean “City of Peace” in Hebrew.
While it is a tourist city, the sacred places of three religions, Christianity, Islam, and Judaism, are concentrated at its Old City.
Let us look into its history.

In the late half of the 19th century, a lot of Palestinians lived at the place at where Israel is currently located.

When the movement of creating a Jewish state at this place began,
Jews scattered around the world began to return to Palestine,
the confrontation between the two parties intensifies.

While the United Nations divided this place into two, Israel and Palestine, after the WWII,
it decided that Jerusalem was to be placed “under international regime”, in other words, it “does not belong to anyone”.
Right after that, Israel declared the establishment of the state.

As a result of the war, Jerusalem is now occupied by Israel.

Both Israel and Palestine claim that Jerusalem is their “capital”, creating conflicts.
Then the issue of embassy comes out.

While an embassy is usually set up in the capital of a country,
in the occasion of Israel,
Japan and other countries set up their embassies not in Jerusalem but in Tel Aviv, the largest city of Israel.

If a country sets up its embassy in Jerusalem, it would mean that this country admits that Jerusalem which “does not belong to anyone” is “the capital of Israel” as claimed by Israel.

In fact, the US thus far has contributed to the peace of the Middle East.

In 1993, with US President Clinton as the mediator,
Israel and Palestine signed the “Oslo Accords".
The Accords assert that Israel and Palestine "coexist as two states" and
“the sovereignty over Jerusalem will be decided by negotiations by both sides”.

However, in 1995, there were voices raising within the US that there was too much concession made to Palestine,
in response to such voices, the Congress decides to “move the US Embassy to Jerusalem”.

To this, the successive presidents postponed the moving every six months, considering that “this may threaten the stability of the Middle East region” if the Embassy is really moved.

However President Trump overturned this practice which has lasted for over 20 years and moved the Embassy to Jerusalem on 14th May, as stated as one of his pledges during the presidential election.

In Japan, Prime Minister Abe states that “Japan has no plan to move the Embassy to Jerusalem”, showing a position that the dialogue between the parties concerned is important.

The demonstrations of Palestine protesting the moving of the US Embassy this time is intense and there has been over 1,800 casualties. (※ As at broadcast)
