Currently Iran, Sudan, and Syria, these three countries are considered to support various terrorist groups such as radical Islamic terrorism groups and are designated as “State Sponsors of Terrorism”.
When a country is designated as “State Sponsor of Terrorism”, while the US implements punishment such as forbidding export of weapons and economic support,
the larger purpose is to
stick the label “rogue state” to these countries.
Rogue means “villain, hoodlum”,
state means “state”
Japan translates it as “rogue state”.
If the US designates North Korea as “State Sponsor of Terrorism”,
this means that it appeals to international community that
North Korea is a “rogue state”.
Originally, North Korea was, in 1988, designated as State Sponsor of Terrorism.
The trigger was, the year before, 115 people were dead
“Korean Air Flight 858 bombing”.
North Korea as a state was involved in it
as judged by the US.
However, 20 years later, in 2008,
the then Bush administration
on condition that North Korea advanced its nuclear disablement
removed the designation of “State Sponsor of Terrorism”.
