[Maths lesson]
Student: Principal is common salaryman, right?
Narumi: Right, common salaryman.
Student: Are function and calculus be of use?
Narumi: Eh?
Student: Have you used them in work?
Narumi: No.
Student: Then, what’s the meaning of learning them?
Student 2: Right! Absolutely not necessary!
Student 3: We don’t use it.
Student 4: My parents forgot them.
Narumi: That is… um… if you study it you can enter a good university, then you enter a good company, then you’ll have a fortunate life… though this can’t be guaranteed, but, the probability of achieving this would be higher… (hesitate) (Students were not satisfied with this answer)
[Medical Room]
Narumi: Ah~~~ I screwed it up! Indeed it’s no way for me to teach students. Why did I say “I’ll teach”?
Ayano: Are you regretting?
Narumi: I am.
Ayano: It’s tough, right?
Narumi: It’s tough.
Ayano: But, you failed because you’ve took challenge, right?
Narumi: Eh?
Ayano: Thus far there has been no principal who would stand on the teaching stand himself, right? When I was student here this was so too.
Narumi: Eh? When you were a student here?
Ayano: I am OG here. When Keimeikan was a girl school.
Narumi: Really?
Ayano: Well, half of the motivation of my work here is my love towards my school.
Narumi: Love?
Ayano: Love.
Narumi: That’s why you are so tender.
Ayano: I?
Narumi: (Smile, point to Ayano)
Ayano: Principal sensei is competent. There is no need to feel defeated.
Narumi: Ayano sensei…
Ayano: Therefore don’t come to Medical Room all the time!
Narumi: … Yes.
[At Principal Room, when Shimazu explained to Narumi what active learning was]
Narumi: So you can deliver lesson in form of active learning? Shimazu sensei.
Shimazu: I can.
Narumi: What didn’t you try this!?
Shimazu: Because thus far all principals didn’t permit me to do so. The effect of active learning can’t be guaranteed.
Narumi: I permit! I permit, so please do try this!
[At Principal Room, after Shimazu tried to deliver one English lesson in form of active learning]
Narumi: Thank you, Narumi sensei. I thought it was an excellent lesson. And then, I think you made a splendid reply to student’s question… Indeed it’s no way for me to stand on the teaching stand. Teachers in school are great, I think. Really.
Shimazu: But, who allows me to deliver this lesson is you Principal. And, towards the question “why we should learn English”, thus far no student has searched for the fundamental reason. The trigger for students to find out this is you Principal. If Principal you are really serious towards this, let us try. To increase the rate of university entrance of Keimeikan High School, or to teach students the reality of the society, I agree very much with all these points. But before that, we have to let students understand why they should study. If we treat high school students like kids, I think the plan of Principal cannot come true.
[School assembly]
Narumi: (Take off his company badge in principal room)
Narumi: Today’s speech is … long. (Students shouted: Why! You said you don’t give long speech, right!?)
Narumi: Recently I gave a Maths lesson to Class 2-3. At that time I was asked such a question. “Is learning function and calculus helpful when I go to the society?” “What is the meaning learning Maths?” Eh. At that time I couldn’t answer. Looking back, when I was in high school time, I also thought about same thing. Learning factorisation and trigonometric function, what will they do to me when I go to the society. Therefore, I once again thought about this question with such memory. And then, indeed, it’s helpful. Well, things like function, though I don’t use in my work, even so, I think it’s helpful.
Student: How is it useful?
Narumi: Maths is an exercise to find out the road to the answer, I think. Where is there a trap, where is there a hint. In a word, it’s a study to cultivate our capability of making correct judgment, I think.
For instance, when you grow up, you may receive weird invitation. “Buy this real estate”, or things like an investment that would never lose. But, if you are strong at Maths, you can imagine the profit induced from your own investment. On the contrary, you’ll be able to notice the absurdity in the bad investment others told you to try.
(Shimazu agreed, Arakawa showed a look of disdain)
Not all talk about investment are cheating. But, by learning function and calculus you learn the way to think, and the way to making deduction. By doing this, you can get the capability of making correct judgment. That would become the skill you use for you to live in this world. This is … (point to the student who asked this question during lesson) my answer to your question in lesson.
Kinami: He took it off.
Mashiba: Eh?
Kinami: His badge.
Narumi: And then one more thing. Using smartphone and mobile phone to take photo of manga magazines in bookshop is illegal.
Mashiba: Eh?
Kinami: Smartphone?
Kashiwagi: Why is he talking about this now?
Narumi: From the perspective of the shop, the commodity which they use to earn money are seen by others with no cost. So the shop has a loss. And, the mangaka-san who draw these mangas are greatly troubled. Mangaka-san create a work and sell them and get earning. These works that they spend their lives on creating are seen by others by smartphone taking photos, they would get no income. The people who take these photos say they love manga so much, but in fact, they are causing trouble to the person who draws this manga. They are humiliating the person who draws this manga, making his creation work a meaningless thing.
When you all go to the society you’ll have to work. For living, everyone has to work. Your fathers and mothers also work to earn money to have you study here.
(Student cried secretly in his seat)
(Kashiwagi clapped hands)
(Narumi looked at that student silently)
(Student raised his head, seemed he understood what Narumi said)
Narumi: This is the end of my speech.
