Q: (The day of interview was 15 September which was the day ARASHI formed as a group) Today is the 18th anniversary of ARASHI forms as a group, congratulations.
S: (Surprised) Thank you. It is today. Well, have I not had this ZIP! interview I would have passed this day commonly, 18th anniversary. Thank you.
Q: Would you do something with ARASHI members today?
S: Today I’ll have meal with Koyama and Kamenashi.
Q: 24HTV members?
S: Yes. Well, as a small closing meeting, a gathering celebrating our work in 24HTV, so… what would other ARASHI members do today? (Giggle)
S: I thought of by the end of my high school life, I would resigned my work as Johnny’s Jr. Well, then I would be a common university student. When I was high school grade 3, before the crossing of my way back home, I received a phone call. I thought “Who is this?” and it was our President. Though it was often mentioned, “Do you want to be the image character of volleyball (FIVB Volleyball Men's World Cup)?” And I thought “Thing like VABO-chan?” He said that we would form a unit (ARASHI), and I said “It’s great!” I thought that it was a temporary unit and would deform in one month (of the volleyball cup).
S: At the end of concert, we five held our hands together, though we also do this now, “We are ARASHI!” and we put up our hands, at that time somehow, “Ah~ I am ARASHI” I thought, somehow, that might be the moment I had determination (on this work).
Q: Was the scenery seen from there also fresh?
S: Well, very, really! Thus far I saw the penlight sea behind senpais, it was tremendously beautiful. However indeed they are the penlights of senpais, so when we said “We are ARASHI!”, what was surrounding us was the penlight sea of people supporting us, that scenery was never seen before, I could see such world, such scenery.
S: In 2001 (summer), I was still a university student that time, reaaaaally I had no work at all. Really no job at all. Really nothing to do. Every day I went to seaside. and I got splendid sun burn. And I was scolded to death.
S: I went to various lives, I talked to various artists, and VERBAL-san of m-flo asked me “Sakurai-kun, why don’t you write your own rap?” I haven’t thought about this at all. To me, I thought that our job is to sing the songs written for us. Ah, indeed there is an option of writing rap, I thought.
Q: Among the lyrics you wrote, which one was with your thoughts?
S: Well, a lot~ You would broadcast (the one I mention)?
Q: We would.
S: Though it was embarrassing to say, in terms of putting in my thoughts, the single “Kotoba Yori Taisetsu na Mono”. Putting rap in single was like dream of dream. Little by little I made appeal, little by little I wrote rap, then “Sakurai, do you want to put in rap in the next single?” staff said to me.
Q: I see…
S: It isn’t my favourite song! Though I put a lot of thoughts in the rap it isn’t my favourite song!
S: I felt a lot bewilderment and restlessness. Indeed, because I didn’t think that this was a job that I could do until thirty something years old, indeed I myself visualised this job to last when I was 25 years old. I didn’t think that I am able to continue this work for such a long time.
S: (Trigger of being news caster) At that time, the announcer I worked with during variety programme, during the week when I was hospitalised for pulling out my wisdom teeth, when I saw that announcer on TV, in the evening news programme, he was doing candid coverage and exclusive interview. And I thought, “Ah, indeed, to do coverage on-site, to do interview in this way, there was barely such work in our company... I wanted to do that job.” (I thought about it) when my wisdom teeth were pulled out and I was with such face (pushing his chins to make them swell). I was Johnny’s, and I was 24 years old that time, to work on news reporting was unimaginable, so when I was asked about working on this, I was really happy, but also I was really surprised, I was really scared. A Johnny’s in 24 years old is said to do news reporting, (there may be some doubt) “Can he really do this?”. In order (for people) not to think in this way, I work hard. So to speak it might have become a motivation to me.
S: For the next work, I have my work now; for the next next work, I have my work now, I think. If I don’t work to my best now, there would be no next work for us. This is probably the “Now, for the Future”.
S: So I haven’t done (TV drama) for around four years, staff said things like, “Ah, you still want to do TV drama”. The work of acting since long time, to be able to do serial drama, my first thought was that I was happy.
Q: To continue the works in front of you on and on, what would you like to do in the future?
S: Champion the world.
Q: (Surprised)
S: No, joke, joke, it’s just a joke.
Q: I was shocked.
S: Though when I was young I had thought “When I becomes 30 I want to do this, when I become 40 I want to do that”, well, now I don’t think about this at all. If I must say, I hope to have a rich life when I become old.
